Freelancing Women In Tech: Marianne

Written by Prof. Tamara Pawluk | Feb 2021

Marianne, PHP developer & passionate IT professional

Marianne is a PHP developer who specializes in TYPO3 CMS. However, she prefers to see herself as a generalist, since she rather uses different technologies depending on the requirements. Additionally, she brings experience in project management, SEO consulting and a degree in German. What she loves most is the diversity and fast-paced evolution of web technologies. “It's impossible to get bored!”

Marianne shared some insights about her profession and inspiration as a tech expert in a short interview for expertlead:

What is the spark that led you to the IT world?

“Since my childhood I’ve been magically attracted by computers and the concept of the internet. I was intrigued by the complexity, the vast possibilities and the potential of reaching a world-wide audience.”

What are the advantages of freelancing that you love the most?

“The freedom of choice in every aspect, be it time, location, clients or technology."

Do you have any role models to follow?

“Many kinds of people for very different reasons."

Have you ever been confronted with gender prejudices?

“In my experience, sexism comes in a subtle way, even in an open-minded industry like ours and it mostly goes unnoticed. The main issue I had with this was the struggle for recognition.”

Do you have any advice for other women who want to start a career in the IT industry?

“Don’t let yourself be intimidated by the learning curve and try not to compare yourself to others. If you find something you’re passionate about, the journey truly is the reward.”

Last but not least, what would you say is your personal motto?

“Do what you love. Love what you do.”
